The Sydney Roosters Foundation, in conjunction with the O’Brien family, are proud to announce the establishment of the John O’Brien Scholarship in honour of the late John O’Brien.
A Roosters supporter since 1967, John O’Brien was one of the most dedicated of Roosters followers up until his passing in 2022, along with his wife Robyn.
After a lifetime of supporting together in the Eastern Suburbs, the O’Brien’s approached the Sydney Roosters in 2020, with a view to financially contributing to the education of young players within the Club’s junior pathway program.
John would then go on to become one of the eighteen Founders of the Sydney Roosters Foundation, allowing for the establishment of the Sydney Roosters Academy.
In 2024, we are pleased to announce the establishment of a formal scholarship, named in honour of John O’Brien, which will support the educational pursuits of nominated pathways players.
We are so grateful that Robyn and the O’Brien Family will continue to honour John’s legacy in this magnificent way.
Craig Walker Sydney Roosters General Manager of Football Programs
Sydney Roosters GM of Football Programs, Craig Walker, said the support of the O’Brien Family has, and will continue to, have a profound impact on our young players’ education.
“The John O’Brien Scholarship will make a huge difference to many boys lives, in having the opportunity to attend prestigious schools in the Eastern Suburbs that would not have otherwise been possible.” he said.
“We are so grateful that Robyn and the O’Brien Family will continue to honour John’s legacy in this magnificent way.”
Speaking on behalf of the family, Robyn O’Brien added that she was proud to see John’s generous spirit living on with the advent of the scholarship.
‘’John and myself have always had a strong passion for supporting the Roosters and for providing opportunities to those less fortunate” she said.
“It is an honour to have this scholarship now solidified in John’s name and the whole family is very proud to continue this great work and provide educational opportunities for the next generation of Roosters players as they come through the junior pathways.”
