The Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy will host the Cronulla Sharks in the girls Under 18s Tarsha Gale competition this Sunday as a curtain raiser to the NRL matchup between the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights.
This will be a first for Rugby League, whereby a women’s competition fixture (playing for competition points) is showcased on an NRL match day on the big stage and is a precursor to the Sydney Roosters ambitions to seek a licence in to the NRL Women’s Premiership.
The Club have taken a hands-on approach to the Under 18s girls side, with many staff and volunteers involved in both the on-field and off-field aspects, such as well-being and welfare presentations.
The team was founded and operates on the premise of providing the opportunity for young indigenous women to play elite level rugby league, with girls coming from all over New South Wales (in fact there are players travelling from as far as Kempsey to play this season).
This nine-a-side concept is a real credit to the NSWRL which introduced the Tarsha Gale Cup in 2017.
Coincidentally, Tarsha is the sister to both Brett & Scott Gale who played with the Roosters in the mid 80s and were Roosters players 763 and 764 respectively.
Sydney Roosters CEO Joe Kelly is extremely pleased to see a Tarsha Gale Cup fixture played as a curtain-raiser to the NRL.
“Having watched a number of these matches this season, these young women show some great skills, put on some great entertainment and wear the Roosters jersey with pride,” he said of the Sydney Roosters Under 18s girls.
“It really is worth coming along early to watch them in action.
“We encourage as many people as possible to come along early to watch these wonderful young women in action, followed by the main event against the Newcastle Knights.”
In line with our Junior representative pricing on game days at Henson Park, we will be providing entry for only $5 on match day (tickets available from the Allianz Stadium Forecourt Box Office) from the box office opening at 4pm (gates open at 4.15pm) up until 4.30pm kick-off.
