If 2018 is proof that good things take a bit of time, Brett Morris could be the exception to the rule after making an immediate impact on the squad in the pre-season.
Brett Morris Talks To RoostersTV
Morris is a true veteran of the game and has achieved just about all there is to achieve in the great game of rugby league.
If you ask his new teammates, they'll tell you that he's a good talker and an impressive role model.
Now entering his 14th pre-season, Morris is happy with his start with the Tricolours.
"There's a great positive vibe around here with the result from last year and everyone's still on a high," Morris said of his first week.
"It's a great place to come and work."
Morris is in a peak position to mentor young players at this point of his career, and he's taken a keen interest in the younger squad members already.
"The younger guys that have come in are doing really well.
"There are some really confident kids coming through and that's what you want.
"You want the next generation to be confident in their ability and they certainly are at this stage."
When asked about his role in the squad at this part of the pre-season, Morris simply enjoys the mentoring role as he looks to get his own body right for another big campaign in 2019.
"The main squad isn't here at the moment, so I'm being that older figure and trying to help out guys where I can.
"It's certainly something I've done in the past and it's a part of footy that I enjoy as well, mentoring the young kids and trying to get the best out of them. "
