Affiliate Wrap: Bears Fly to 40-Point Win

Over the weekend, the Roosters affiliate clubs drew varied results with the North Sydney Bears recording a huge victory and the Jets suffering an unfortunate defeat.

North Sydney Bears

The North Sydney Bears decimated the Newcastle Knights at their home ground of Cessnock Sportsground in Round 23 of the NSW Cup, posting up a 54-14 victory on Saturday afternoon.

A week after their biggest victory of the season with a 36-point margin over Parramatta, North Sydney put in an even better performance as they overcame Newcastle by 40.

The Bears got off to a shaky start, conceding first points as Simi Sasagi crossed for the Knights after just six minutes.

The visitors hit back shortly after, with Jesse Marschke scoring to put his side up 6-4.

With more tries coming through Fetalaiga Pauga and Zach Dockar-Clay, the Bears were up by 12 after half an hour.

Pauga crossed for his second and Reuben Porter scored as well just before the break, giving North Sydney a strong 26-4 lead as the sides went into the sheds.

Picking up where they left off, Marschke scored another for the Bears 11 minutes after half time.

Showing some fight despite trailing by 28 points, the Knights put two tries on in a four-minute span coming through Kyle McCarthy and David Armstrong.

In the end, North Sydney ran away with the victory as the Captain Dockar-Clay found a double and Tuipulotu Katoa, Ben Marschke, and Toa Mata’afa all crossed the stripe in the final exchanges to record a convincing 54-14 victory.

Ipswich Jets

The Ipswich Jets suffered another Queensland Cup defeat in Round 20, being downed 24-10 by the Sunshine Coast Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

The home side got off to a strong start, as centre Kane Jackson crossed the stripe in the sixth minute for an early advantage.

A first half double to Sualauvi Faalogo saw the Falcons further their lead, giving them a 16-0 buffer at the break.

They picked up where they left off in the second half, with Max Bailey scoring a try off the bench to establish a 22-point advantage.

The Jets showed some heart to stay in the contest and claw back two tries through Jacob Reedy-Bartlett and Dray Ngatuere-Wroe, but they eventually fell 24-10.

Glebe Dirty Reds

The Glebe Dirty Reds had the weekend off in Ron Massey Cup as they prepare to face the Wentworthville Magpies on Sunday August 13 at St Marys Leagues Stadium in a qualifying final.

Kaiviti Silktails

The Kaiviti Silktails 2023 Ron Massey Cup season has come to a close after suffering a 50-18 defeat in the final week of the competition.

Two of their pathways players Watisoni Waqanisaravi and Sirilo Lovokuro stepped up to fill in in the Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team on the weekend, where they achieved a 16-8 win over the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles to all but secure the Minor Premiership.
