A legend of Rugby League media, Ian Heads OAM, passed away earlier this week following a long illness.
Ian Heads was one of the most highly-regarded Rugby League journalists, authors and historians of our time with a special connection to the Sydney Roosters.
Throughout his career, Heads wrote for Sydney’s Daily and Sunday Telegraphs, Rugby League Week, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun-Herald, while also authoring more than 40 Rugby League biographies and histories, including ‘From where the Sun Rises: 100 Years of the Sydney Roosters’.
He was honoured with an OAM in 2010 for service to the media as a sports journalist, author and mentor, and was inducted into the Sydney Cricket Ground Media Hall of Honour in 2014 and the NRL Hall of Fame in 2023. Ian, known for being a passionate Rooster, honoured the Club by serving on the Sydney Roosters Hall of Fame committee 2023.
He has left a lasting legacy across the entire NRL, and the Sydney Roosters offer their condolences to wife Joy, children Phil and Katherine, his family and friends of Ian, one of the off-field greats of our game.
