The Roosters NSW Cup team have won their third successive match in dramatic circumstances at Wentworth Park.
Trailing the Bulldogs 22-16 with just three minutes remaining, left winger Tyreece Tait scored in the corner (his 14th try in 10 Cup games this season) and half back Hugo Savala landed the sideline conversion, despite slipping over in the attempt (reminiscent of a Cameron Smith goal in 2016 against the Roosters at the SFS).
With six seconds left on the clock Savala, from 35m out, kicked the winning field goal to give the Roosters their seventh win of the season, 23-22.
Former Wallaby and Olympian Mark Nawaqanitawase made an impressive Roosters debut, highlighted by a 65th minute try with a 20m dash to the line where he beat four defenders.
In the NSW Women’s Premiership, the Roosters have moved up to 8th on the ladder with a 24-20 win over the Bulldogs at Belmore.
NRLW forward Eliza Lopamaua scored her first career hat trick in this competition, which gave the Roosters their second successive win.
The Roosters Jersey Flegg team notched up successive wins by defeating the second placed Bulldogs 40-20 at Wentworth Park.
A number of very narrow losses (six by six or less) has meant the team won’t play finals this year, after securing the minor premiership in both 2022 and 2023, but the season, in which the Roosters have used 46 players, has been very productive from a development standpoint.
In the Ron Massey Cup, the Glebe Dirty Reds have tuned up for the finals with a final round 66-14 demolition of the Penrith Brothers. Glebe ran in 13 tries with both winger David Nofoaluma and lock Phoenix Steinwede scoring hat tricks.
The finals commence next weekend with Glebe traveling to St Marys to take on the fifth placed Ryde-Eastwood Hawks in an elimination final.
