A Friday night to savour in Round 2 as the Warriors and Roosters dug deep to bounce back from Round 1 defeats.

A desperate Daniel Tupou tackle ensured the Roosters held on for a stunning 38-32 upset victory over the Panthers at CommBank Stadium, while the Warriors thumped an injury hit Manly 36-16 at GoMedia Stadium.

Few gave the Roosters a chance heading into the game after a 50-14 drubbing to the Broncos and there were concerning signs early when Paul Alamoti strolled through to open the scoring for Penrith.

I reckon that was our greatest win as a club, given the amount of players we have got out.

Roosters captain James Tedesco

Trent Robinson’s men, however, were up for the fight and quickly hit back through tries to Mark Nawaqanitawase  and Connor Watson. A see-sawing first half followed, with Liam Henry scoring in the 38th minute to make it 18-18 at the break.

Each time Penrith looked to gain the ascendency, the Roosters hit back and they managed to keep their noses in front before breaking the game open with two tries in three minutes to jump out to a 34-24 lead.

Panthers v Roosters – Round 2, 2025

A 71st-minute Dom Young try looked to have sealed the upset but Penrith came home with a wet sail and had one last set of six in the final minute to force golden point.

The reigning premiers worked their way down the field before winger Brian To’o desperately dove for the corner. Tupou, however, had other ideas and ensured the Roosters held on for a famous victory.

Roosters captain James Tedesco told Channel Nine: "I reckon that was our greatest win as a club, given the amount of players we have got out. To do that against a full-strength Panthers, that was our greatest win".

In a double blow for the reigning premiers, fullback Dylan Edwards left the field with an apparent leg injury midway through the second half and did not return.

Tedesco was outstanding for the visitors, finishing with three try assists, two line breaks and seven tackle breaks, while emerging half Sandon Smith was superb with ball in hand.

Panthers captain Nathan Cleary told Channel Nine: "We were awful, it's a big wake up call for us. It may have been complacency, there was just a lack of concentration tonight. Maybe it's a silver lining, maybe we needed this to turn our season around and give us a kick start".

'Anything can happen'

Nathan Cleary insists the Panthers won't be underestimating the Roosters, despite last weekend's 50-12 loss to the Broncos.

"It's such a great cub and has been for such a long time now," he told Fox League. "At their helm is James Tedesco, an absolute superstar of a player, so we definitely can't take them lightly and at this time of year anything can happen, so we really want to be focusing ourselves and playing well."

Late Mail

Panthers: A change 24 hours out from kick-off with back-rower Isaiah Papali'i dropping out, replaced by Liam Henry in his return from a shoulder injury. Brian To'o's return from a hamstring injury has triggered a backline reshuffle, with Paul Alamoti shifting to the centres and Luke Garner moving to the bench. Fellow winger Casey McLean suffered a head knock in Vegas but will line up thanks to the extended gap between games. Brad Schneider is 18th man.

Roosters: Local junior Hugo Savala is set to make his NRL debut after being promoted to the bench when Lindsay Collins dropped out on Thursday. The Origin forward has been rested after battling illness this week. Taylor Losalu will start the game at prop in jersey No.17. Centre Billy Smith will make his long-awaited return to the field via NSW Cup on Saturday, with coach Trent Robinson confirming Smith will drop out of the extended NRL squad. Victor Radley's absence due to the concussion protocol has also prompted a forward pack reshuffle, young gun Salesi Foketi stepping into the starting side and former Eel Makahesi Makatoa coming on to the bench. Ethan Roberts is 18th man.
