Our Roosters senior representative sides travelled to Canberra on Saturday with our teams returning home with one win and one loss, whilst the two Glebe senior affiliate teams were beaten at home by St Marys.
NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup team have posted their second win of the season with a 34-26 over the Canberra Raiders in Belconnen.
Seven current players (Brandon Smith, Beniah Ioelu, Tyler Moriaty, Connor Watson, Reece Foley, Michael Coleman and Jaxson Allen) who have played hooker in the NRL or the N.S.W. Cup in the last twelve months were unavailable in Round 4 so the Roosters played five eighth Jake Elliott at hooker for 27 minutes and centre Kyron Fekitoa in the position for the remainder of the game.
The Roosters were slow out of the blocks and looked headed for defeat when the Raiders led 12-0 after twelve minutes and were totally dominating the game. However, the Roosters kept their composure and once they gained a reasonable share of possession and field position, they fought their way back into the game. The Roosters scored three first half tries to lead 18-16 at the break. Tries to fullback Ethan King, off a Hugo Savala (halfback) pass was followed by a Jake Elliott try, (when playing hooker) off a lovely late offload from prop Makatoa Makahesi. A grubber kick by Savala led to a converted try to left centre Billy Smith to complete the Roosters first half scoring. It was Smith’s third try from three games in 2025 and his 21st in just 29 NSW Cup career games.
The Raiders took the lead 22-18 in the 49th minute but then two lovely try assists from Jake Elliott, playing five eighth, led to a double for left winger Tom Rodwell and the Roosters led 30-22 within the final twenty minutes. The Rodwell double took his season tally to five from four games. A Raiders try in the 64th minute brought the score back to 30-26 but fortunately a try late in the game to right centre Ben Johnson off an Aston Warwick pass sealed the victory for the Roosters.
Halfback Hugo Savla, backing up from playing NRL the previous evening, finished the match with five goals from seven attempts and his general kicking game played a vital role in the Roosters victory.
Ethan King, at fullback, was again one of the Roosters best performers, with 20 runs and 216 metres gained to add to his try and line break, Right edge Aston Warwick, returning from a two week suspension was very strong on the right edge with 39 tackles, whilst prop Taylor Losalu, back from the NRL, ran for 175 metres, including 88 post contact, in a 58 minute stint (47 of which were consecutive from the kick off).
The Roosters next play 12th placed South Sydney next Sunday at Redfern Oval.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg team have narrowly lost their clash with the Canberra Raiders at Belconnen. The Roosters fought hard throughout the game and trailed 10-6 at half time. Left winger Kade Maguire was the Roosters first half try scorer, off a nice pass from captain Will Molloy, playing at left centre. Maguire made it four tries in four games in 2025 with his Round 4 try.
The Roosters took the lead 12-10 early in the second half through a nice Molloy try but as the rain arrived so did the Raiders best form and in a twenty-minute period the Raiders went from 12-10 behind to 30-12 in front. Tries to Prop Fanafou Seve (his second in two games for the club) and a second to Molloy saw the score reduced to 30-24 with six minutes remaining. However, the sin binning of Seve in the 77th minute prevented any realistic chance of a late Roosters flourish to secure a draw. Despite the loss, the Roosters can be proud of the performance against the second placed Raiders, away from home, and another win should not be far away, particularly when forwards Zac Visconti and Jackson Pennell return.
The Roosters next play the winless South Sydney at Redfern Oval next Sunday.
NSW Women’s Premiership
Competition commences on Sunday, 6th July
Ron Massey Cup
The Glebe Ron Massey Cup team have lost their Round 3 clash with St Marys at Wentworth Park. St Marys ran in six tries to Glebe’s three in a 32-14 victory. Due to the wet weekend, it was one of only two Ron Massey Cup matches that went ahead. Saints led 10-4 at half time and were much too good for a Glebe team that wasn’t at its best.
Glebe was able to call on six Roosters NSW Cup players for this match. The entire Glebe three quarter line for this match (Trey Peni, Turoa Williams, Vito Tevaga and Emery Jolliffe) are Roosters Cup players as were the starting props Lafi Tuinauvai and Josh Finau. Unfortunately, their presence wasn’t sufficient to lift Glebe to victory, although Peni did score two tries for Glebe, whilst Jolliffe scored the other.
Glebe now plays 6th placed Wentworthville next Sunday at Wentworth Park.
Sydney Shield
The Glebe Sydney Shield team have been soundly beaten by St Marys in their Round 3 clash at Wentworth Park. St Marys scored 11 tries to 2 in a 54-12 victory in the only Shield match that was played on the weekend due to the wet weather.
Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup players Brooklyn Taumata and Joseph Currie played for Glebe. The Dirty Reds are back at home next Sunday, playing against Wentworthville.
