The Sydney Roosters have had a mixed weekend with their senior representative sides, but their N.S.W. Cup team have posted back-to-back win a solid victory over South Sydney.
NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup team have won their third game of the season, and second in succession, with a decisive 24-10 win over South Sydney at Redfern Oval.
Despite being understrength, particularly in the backline and at hooker, the Roosters were resilient throughout and thoroughly deserved their victory.
The Rabbitohs did dominate the first twenty minutes, with the vast majority of the game played within the Roosters territory. The Roosters defence, however, saw off wave after wave of Souths attacks and only conceded the one first half try. The Roosters scored two of their own in the first half to lead 12-4 at the break, with a lovely individual try to five eighth Jake Elliott in the 20th minute and another to bench prop Lafi Tuinauvai in the 33rd.
The Roosters had more possession and field position in the second half and despite Souths scoring the first try of the second half and getting to within two pints of the Roosters with that try, the Roosters ran out comfortable winners with two second half tries of their own, one to left winger Tyreece Tait and another to interchange middle forward Ethan Roberts.
The Roosters were well served by forwards Taylor Losalu, Makahesi Makatoa and Ethan Roberts in the middle, whilst Aston Warwick on the right edge was very solid again. Malaysian born fullback Owen Flaherty, filling in for Ethan King (illness) was a constant threat to the Souths defence whilst five eighth and local junior Josh Durkin, on debut, was also very effective in general play and converted all four Roosters tries, including one from the far left touchline.
The Roosters next play St George Illawarra in Wollongong on Saturday.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg team have fallen to last position on the competition table after suffering a 38-10 loss to South Sydney at Redfern Oval. The Roosters conceded eight tries and were down 20-0 at half time.
The Roosters two second half tries were scored by prop Fanafou Seve (his third from just three games) and winger Osca Catton.
The Roosters next play St George Illawarra in Wollongong on Saturday.
NSW Women’s Premiership
Competition commences on Sunday, 6th July
Ron Massey Cup
The Glebe Ron Massey Cup team have moved into fifth place on the competition ladder with a 40-20 victory over the Wentworthville Magpies at Wentworth Park.
With a number of injuries to the Roosters NRL and NSW Cup squads, Glebe was only able to call on one Roosters NSW Cup player (winger Emery Jolliffe, who scored Glebe’s fourth try) for this Round 4 clash.
Glebe scored seven tries to four and led 30-6 at half time.
The defending premiers travel to Penrith next Saturday to play Penrith Brothers.
Sydney Shield
The Glebe Sydney Shield team have conceded 11 tries in a 60-0 defeat by the Wentworthville Magpies at Wentworth Park.
It was the Dirty Reds’ third loss in four games this season. Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Druzel Taula (fullback), Joseph Currie (right centre) and James Khoo (left centre) played for Glebe in this round 4 match.
Glebe will next play Penrith Brothers at Penrith next Saturday.
