The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg team have demolished the St George Illawarra Dragons in their Round 6 clash in Wollongong in a welcome return to the winners list.
NSW Cup
After two successive wins, the Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup team have suffered an emphatic 44-12 loss to St George Illawarra in Wollongong. The Roosters began poorly and never recovered. The Dragons, who led 12-0 at half time, ran in eight tries to bring the Roosters back to earth with a thud.
Missing regular fullback Ethan King for a second straight match with illness and captain Max McCathie with concussion, the Roosters scored just two tries, one to left winger Tyreece Tait, off a lovely Jake Elliott cut out pass early in the second half and a second, late in the match, to Tom Rodwell, playing left centre, due to the unavailability of Junior Pauga (back) and Mark Nawaqanitawse (NRL 18th man). It was Rodwell’s sixth try in his six N.S.W. Cup games this season.
One bright spot for the Roosters was the successful returns from injury to Xavier Va’a (MCL) and Reece Foley (syndesmosis), neither of whom had played a match previously this season. Foley and Jake Elliott alternated between hooker and five eighth, with the absence of hookers Beniah Ioelu, Tyler Moriaty, Michael Coleman, Jaxson Allen and Brandon Smith through the grades. Kyron Fekitoa who had filled in at hooker in a few matches this season was also unable to suit up for Round 6. Foley played the full 80 minutes whilst Va’a got through 33 minutes across two stints.
The Roosters made 13 errors and missed 36 tackles. Hard working backrower Hayden Barton made 38 tackles, missing just one.
This Friday afternoon the Roosters have a home game at Mascot Oval where they take on fifth placed Penrith.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have jumped from 14th to 8th on the competition table following their second win of 2025. The Roosters have had a resounding 48-16 victory over St George Illawarra in Wollongong, running in eight converted tries, after leading 18-10 at half time.
The crucial period of the match came early in the second half with the Roosters leading 18-16 and down to 12 men for ten minutes with Ben Taylor in the sin bin. Not only did the Roosters not concede a try in this period they scored two of their own to lead 30-16 when Taylor returned to the field. A Kade Maguire double took his season tally to six from six games whilst French international Enzo Griffier also crossed for a double, from the interchange bench.
After playing Round 5 in the NSW Cup, five eighth and captain Josh Durkin returned to Flegg for the Dragons game and was outstanding for the victors. Starting props Julius Mitchell and Fanafou Seve provided a great platform for Durkin and his outside backs to work with. Hopefully, the team will take great confidence from this win as they try and climb up the table.
On Good Friday the Roosters face a stern test against second placed Penrith at Mascot Oval.

Ron Massey Cup
Defending premiers Glebe have moved to second place on the Ron Massey Cup table with a 40-4 victory over Penrith Brothers at Penrith. Glebe ran in eight tries, two to Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad member Emery Jolliffe. Jolliffe, son of Roosters Board member Andrew, was one of two Roosters Cup players used by Glebe on Saturday, the other being forward Josh Finau. Glebe led by 20-4 at half time and took their 2025 record to three wins from five games following the win.
The Ron Massey Cup takes an Easter break next weekend and Glebe’s next game won’t be until they play Mounties on 26th April.
Sydney Shield
After being thumped 60-0 by Wentworthville last week, the Glebe Sydney Shield team have won their second match of the season by defeating Penrith Brothers 34-14 at Penrith.
The Dirty Reds scored seven tries, with three to Brooklyn Hardaker, nephew of former Roosters forward of the 1970s, Garry Hardaker, after leading 20-4 at half time.
Glebe used four Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members on Saturday; outside backs James Khoo, Brooklyn Taumata, Druzel Taula and interchange player Joseph Currie. Five eighth Vincent Valentinetti returned to the side after replacing Josh Durkin in Flegg last week, and scored the third Glebe try, started from within Glebe’s half after a line break from left centre James Khoo.
The Sydney Shield takes an Easter break next weekend and Glebe’s next game won’t be until they play Mounties on 26th April.
